Currency Exchange
Before and after arriving in Korea, there are several options for exchanging currency. The most suitable method may vary depending on individual circumstances, including exchange rates, fees, and convenience.
The most common method is to exchange your local currency into Korean Won (KRW) at a bank in your home country before departure. Currency exchange services are also available at most international airports before departure. Exchange rates and fees vary depending on the bank and airport, so it is recommended to check the available options in advance.
After arriving in Korea, currency exchange services are available at airports, banks, and authorized exchange offices. However, airport exchange counters may not always offer the most favorable exchange rates compared to banks or mobile exchange services, so it is recommended to compare rates before exchanging large amounts of money.
Korea also has many Global ATMs that allow international cardholders to withdraw Korean Won using overseas bank accounts or cards. Some Global ATMs are available on university campuses as well. Withdrawal fees may vary depending on your card issuer and the ATM operator.
If you open a Korean bank account after arrival, you can use Korean ATMs and banking services for convenient cash withdrawals, deposits, and other financial transactions.
Many international students also use overseas payment cards or travel cards for daily expenses in Korea. Nevertheless, carrying a small amount of Korean Won in cash upon arrival is recommended for transportation, small purchases, and situations where card payments may not be available.”
