Leave of Absence/Return

Students who wish to temporarily interrupt their studies may apply for a Leave of Absence, and they can apply for a Return to School once the approved leave period expires. Applications can be submitted through the following path on the portal:
[Academic Affairs → Academic Status Changes → Application → Leave of Absence/Return/Withdrawal/Readmission].

  • Registered Students (those who have expressed intent to register and paid tuition): Eligible to apply for a leave of absence within the first 2/4 (half) of the total class days.
  • Unregistered Students: Eligible to apply within the first 1/4 of the total class days.
  • Installment Payment Students: Eligible to apply within the first 2/4 of the total class days, provided that the tuition fee has been paid in full.
  • Undergraduate Students: Up to 6 semesters (Pre-medical students: Up to 3 semesters). ※ Mandatory military service under the Military Service Act, Start-up Leave (up to 6 semesters), and Recommended Leave (up to 4 semesters) are excluded from the general (personal) leave limit.
  • Graduate Students: Master’s up to 4 semesters / Doctoral up to 6 semesters / Combined Master’s & Doctoral up to 8 semesters.
  • Single Application Limit: Each leave of absence application can be approved for up to a maximum of 1 year (2 semesters).
Study Withdrawal

If you wish to withdraw from Seoul National University, you must contact the SNU Office of International Affairs (SNU OGA) immediately to receive guidance on the subsequent procedures. SNU OGA is required to report the commencement and termination of a student’s studies to the Immigration Office, which includes reporting your scheduled departure date from Korea. Additionally, if you reside in the SNU Gwanak Residence Halls, you must complete the official check-out procedure in accordance with the guidance provided by your designated RA office.

Study Period Change

Dual Degree and Joint Degree Students: If you wish to extend your period of study, you must obtain official approval from both your Home University and Seoul National University.
